Frickley Athletic FC - A Brief History
Frickley Athletic F.C. is a cornerstone of the SESKU community. Originally founded by miners at the Frickley Colliery in 1908, they are known as "The Blues." Based at Westfield Lane in South Elmsall, they play in the Northern Counties East Football League.
Key Moments in the Club's History:
- 1908–1910: The club was formed to give local colliery workers a fun sports outlet. They officially joined the South Yorkshire League before moving to the Sheffield Association.
- 1924: The club joined the old Midland League, where they played for decades.
- 1974: The team changed its name from "Frickley Colliery" to "Frickley Athletic" to help them climb higher up the non-league ladder.
- 1985–1986 (The Golden Era): This was the most successful time in the club's history. They reached the 3rd Round of the FA Cup and finished as runners-up in the Alliance Premier League (now the National League), playing at the highest level of non-league football.
- 1987–2022: The Blues spent a long, proud stretch in the Northern Premier League.
- 2022: The club joined the Northern Counties East Football League, where they represent the local area.

Westfield Lane has served as the historic home ground for Frickley Athletic F.C. since 1910. Located in South Elmsall, Pontefract (WF9 2EQ), this venue is a classic example of a traditional, old-fashioned non-league football ground.

- Seating: It features 490 covered seats located within the main grandstand.
- Record Attendance: A historic crowd of 5,800 spectators squeezed into the ground during the famous 1985–86 season for an FA Cup Third Round match against Rotherham United.

- The Main Grandstand: Opened in September 1929, the grandstand is the centerpiece of the ground. It was funded by the Miners' Welfare Fund and physically built by striking colliers. It offers an excellent elevated view of the pitch and features a traditional central player's tunnel protruding from a pitched roof.
- The Terraces: The ground has uncovered terracing behind both goals, while the far side opposite the main stand features a long, covered terrace.
- The Social Club: Located past the turnstiles, the vibrant on-site club features a colourful mural celebrating Frickley’s 2010 centenary, proudly displaying local miners.
- The Spoil Heap Transformation: For decades, the ground was overlooked by a massive colliery spoil heap. Following the closure of the pit, this area was completely landscaped and transformed into what is now the adjacent Frickley Country Park.
